Estrogen in a Man’s World - How Estrogen Relates to Male Sexual Dysfunction
Estrogen is primarily known as the predominantly female hormone that helps build calcium in bones, increases sexual drive, and prevents the overheating of the nervous system. Not commonly known is that it also assists in the alternating of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous functions needed for bio-electric charging and is actually necessary for the engorgement of sex organs. Also not often recognized is the effect a high presence of estrogen can have on the male sexual function.
Among aging men particularly, estrogen is an important factor. It is produced through a enzyme process called aromatase that transforms testosterone into estrogen (estradiol). For reasons yet unknown, aging men tend to have higher aromatase activity causing their testosterone to convert into excessive estrogen. Generally, small amounts of estrogen are produced in the testes of all males, as well as in their adrenal/pituitary glands. Though men usually have somewhat low estrogen levels in their blood, an excess can cause them to experience any number of adverse symptoms.
The phenomenon of male breast growth is known as “gynecomastia”. When the body of a male is accomodating too much estrogen, the generation of breast cells increase and actual breast tissue forms. These are not simply the “man boobs” associated with overweight men, they’re real breasts.
Also of concern for males in relation to high estrogen levels is the potential emergence of infertility. A man’s fertile state is dependent on the number of sperm he produces and the ability for them to reach and penetrate a female’s egg. The greater the presence of estrogen, the greater the motility of his sperm is daunted.
It are these same hormonal issues that can lead to erectile dysfunction, or impotence. There are many causes of the sexual disorder, one of which is, you guessed it, the chemical imbalance usually associated with an excessive estrogen level. By regulating and balancing the presence of the female hormone in males, it is possible to reduce the level of adverse symptoms related to its occupation.
Oddly enough, estrogen is a necessary hormone in men, but too much of it can cause them to assume female characteristics and experience potential damage to their sexual ability. To avoid these risks, a man should maintain an appopriate body weight (or lose weight if he is overweight), avoid estrogernic foods, eat cruciferous veggies, and take natural testosterone boosters to restore balance to his hormone regulation.
